COM466: NewsU Tutorial (News Sense: The Building Blocks of News)
Q: Why is proper attribution so important?
Proper attribution is critical in reporting because this way readers know where the information is coming from — whether the information is from a person, a document, a report, etc.
Q: What is a primary source and why is it important?
A primary source is a person or a document or report with first-hand knowledge of what a reporter is reporting on. They’re important because a primary source is a starting point and is someone or something with important first-hand knowledge.
Q: Which story building block makes the most sense to you as a reader and why?
The story building block that makes the most sense to me as a reader is: “Los Angeles Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa trounced Mayor James Hahn to become the city’s first Hispanic mayor in more than a century.” I chose this building block because it tells me, as a reader, what the story is.
