PostSecret comes to the UW thanks to student group Active Minds

For my first full audio story, I used audio I collected while working on a story for The Daily. In the two and a half minute clip (below), you’ll hear both Frank Warren, the creator of PostSecret, and Katie McCorkell, a junior at the UW and president of the student group Active Minds.

The only disappointment I really had in making this was that I was unable to use any ambient sound. Luckily, I think the topic is extremely relevant (the event is tonight!) and PostSecret is an extremely popular website/event/book(s) — especially among college students.

My only real problem in putting this project together was uploading the .mp3 to SoundCloud. At first it would make a bunch of annoying noise that wasn’t in the original file. After a few minutes I realized I had forgotten to set the track to 44.1 kHz in Audacity. Once I fixed that, it was good to go! So without further ado…

COM466: Regarding the audio assignment

I’m planning on doing my “proof of concept” audio assignment about the website PostSecret (an example of a sent in secret is above). The creator is coming to campus on Friday night at Meany Hall, but in previewing the event for The Daily, I have lots of audio to play around with. I’m looking forward to it. Not as much as this 10 day photo project thing, though.

Unfortunately for the audio assignment, I won’t have much room for ambient sound, but hopefully the interviews will still be compelling enough. Plus, the story is timely. So it should work out well.

Photojournalism: News stories — three good and one bad

This photo from The Seattle Times was taken for a recent story about a man that’s living under the 520 bridge. I find it intriguing because the viewer gets a sense of the man’s living conditions, as well as a really interesting view of being underneath the bridge.

Next up, a story from The New York Times about a Baltimore politician that recently died. The photo drew me to the story in the first place. It’s such a great perspective.

A third great news story photo is this shot from Lucas Anderson, a photographer at The Daily, taken for a story about the annual American Indian Student Commission’s powwow. It probably gave us our best front page of last quarter. I love the lighting.

And last is this photo from the Western Washington University student newspaper, The Western Front, involving their student government presidential candidate debate. Yuck, I just can’t find anything appealing about it at all.
